Program: Wisconsin Hometown Stories

Episode: Wausau - Wisconsin's First Homebuilt Airplane

After seeing airplanes fly, and soaring in a hot air balloon, Wausau's John Schwister decided to build his own airplane. Built in both St. Paul and Wausau, Schwister named the plane the "Minnesota-Badger." He made his first flight on June 23, 1911. It was the first Wisconsin-built airplane that could fly, and a Wisconsin Historical society marker in Rothschild celebrates the spot.
